Malaysia's BNPL Debt Is 0.3% of the Household Total, but Over 70% of Users Are B40
Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) accounted for 0.3% of Malaysia's total household debt at the end of 2025, according to figures cited in an October 1 interview with ShopeePay CEO Alain Yee. Outstanding BNPL balances reached RM4.9 billion across 7.5 million active accounts, with 3.2% of the balance overdue. The average BNPL transaction in 2025 was RM91, and over 70% of users fall in the B40 income group, mostly aged 21 to 45 and earning below RM5,000 a month.
The interview framed why a small share can still matter: a RM1,000 BNPL balance equals roughly 59% of the RM1,700 monthly minimum wage, and about 70% of ShopeePay users reported no access to other formal credit. Yee described the account-freeze mechanism as strict ("If you miss your bill by one day, your entire SPayLater account gets frozen") and argued that the business cannot make money lending to people who cannot repay. The Consumer Credit Act 2025 came into force on March 1, 2026, and licensing for BNPL providers under the Consumer Credit Commission took effect on June 1, with a six-month transition for providers to comply.
Chainalysis: Singapore's Crypto Activity Rises 55.4% to $284 Billion as the Wider Region Contracts
Chainalysis's 2026 Geography of Crypto Report, covering July 2025 to June 2026, puts Singapore's crypto activity at US$284 billion, up 55.4% and the largest in a region spanning Central and Southeast Asia and Oceania. The wider region contracted 6.8%. Institutional trading drove Singapore's growth, rising 94% to US$60 billion and concentrated among a small number of market makers, over-the-counter firms and brokerages.
Elsewhere in the ranking, Vietnam recorded US$122.2 billion, Indonesia US$83.2 billion, Thailand US$82.8 billion and the Philippines US$44.5 billion. The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam together accounted for 14.4% of global peer-to-peer transfers under US$10,000 while representing 2.5% of global crypto economy value. Cross-border stablecoin usage in the region ran 3.2 times higher than domestic usage.
Gkash Becomes a Direct PayNet Participant for DuitNow QR, MyDebit and FPX
Malaysian payment provider Gkash now operates as a direct participant in Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), according to a September 29 report. The connection lets it process DuitNow QR, MyDebit and FPX transactions with fewer intermediary layers, and gives it greater control over payment integration and transaction operations as volumes grow.
Gkash provides payment gateway services, payment terminals and SoftPOS solutions to merchants in physical stores and online. The report did not disclose pricing or volume figures.
Eyes on the Day Ahead
Nothing concrete is scheduled for the next 24 hours, so this looks 3 to 5 days out: MAS's consultation on proposed Payment Services Act amendments for stablecoin regulation closes on October 16, and Malaysia's BNPL licensing transition under the Consumer Credit Act 2025 continues through the end of the year.
