Sea Limited's Fintech Arm Monee Grows Revenue 59% as AI Cuts Loan-Review Time by 95%
Sea Limited's second-quarter 2026 results show its digital financial services unit, Monee, generating $1.4 billion in revenue, up 58.9% year-on-year — the fastest-growing of the group's three segments alongside e-commerce arm Shopee and gaming arm Garena. Consumer and SME loans outstanding reached $11.1 billion, up 62.5% year-on-year, while the non-performing loan ratio (past due more than 90 days) held at 1%. Group-wide, Sea posted $7.8 billion in Q2 revenue (up 48.1% year-on-year) and $458.1 million in net income, bringing first-half 2026 revenue to $14.9 billion.
The underwriting mechanics behind that loan growth are increasingly AI-driven: the company said AI-based document verification now reads user-submitted income documents and cuts review time by roughly 95%, enabling near-instant credit decisions at the volume Monee is now originating. Shopee, which accounted for 72% of group revenue, also leaned on AI-adjacent logistics gains in the region's largest market — Indonesia instant-delivery order volumes grew about 80% year-on-year while cost per order fell about 20%.
Malaysia Launches Its Rakyat Digital Portal, With 100,000 Free AI Subscriptions Attached
Malaysia's Ministry of Digital, through MyDIGITAL Corporation, formally launched the upgraded Rakyat Digital portal on Aug. 11 at AI Malaysia Takeover 2026 (AIMTO_26), a two-day event at The Campus in Ampang billed as the country's largest AI upskilling gathering. Minister Gobind Singh Deo positioned the portal as a unified platform for digital literacy, skills training and AI-tool access, tying it to Malaysia's stated goal of becoming an "AI Nation" by 2030. The event's Aug. 12 AI Learn-a-thon paired hands-on training in prompt engineering and workflow automation with a bid for a Malaysia Book of Records entry for the largest such session.
The portal's headline benefit is concrete: starting Aug. 31, 100,000 Malaysians aged 18 to 30 who complete five prescribed modules — AI Safety, CyberSAFE, Generative AI, Agentic AI and Cloud Untuk Rakyat — receive three months of free access to a leading generative-AI application, rolled out in four cohorts of 25,000, with the first cohort beginning Sept. 16. A parallel track offers 100,000 Malaysians three months of free Coursera access to more than 16,000 courses through a government-funded Global Learning Pass.
Thailand's SEC and Central Bank Set a February 2027 Deadline for the Crypto Travel Rule
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission and the Bank of Thailand said on Aug. 7 they are jointly tightening oversight of stablecoin transactions, including USDT and USDC, moving toward a formal Travel Rule regime that would require digital-asset business operators to attach originator and beneficiary information to qualifying transfers. The SEC has outlined a timeline to issue the guidelines within this year, with full enforcement taking effect in February 2027. The push also adds Enhanced Due Diligence requirements for high-risk customers and calls for exchanges and brokers to deploy stronger blockchain-analytics capability.
The regulators framed the move as a direct response to scale: cybercrime and online-scam cases tied to digital-asset flows have surged past 380,000 over the past year, with economic losses exceeding 25 billion baht. The Travel Rule approach — tracking counterparties on both sides of a transfer rather than just flagging suspicious addresses — mirrors the standard already in force or under construction elsewhere in the region, including Vietnam's licensing track and Singapore's existing DPT framework.
Eyes on the Day Ahead
Conviction 2026, Ho Chi Minh City's Vietnam Digital Asset & AI Economy Forum, runs its second day on Aug. 15 with tracks dedicated to enterprise AI, sovereign AI infrastructure and AI-agent automation — worth watching for any Vietnamese government commentary on how the country's national AI ambitions intersect with its newly opened crypto-exchange licensing track.
